BFT gate motor replacement in West Palm Beach typically runs $850 to $1,900 installed, depending on whether you need a swing or slide operator and which BFT series your gate uses. We stock BFT-compatible motors and parts on the truck and can usually complete the swap in one visit, often same day. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: the gate stops mid-cycle, makes a grinding noise, or simply won’t respond to the remote after a South Florida storm.
BFT builds motors for both swing and slide gates, and the failure patterns differ by style. Swing operators wear out capacitors and limit switches first. Slide operators eat drive gears and control boards, especially when the track picks up sand from coastal breezes or debris from a summer downpour. Either way, the motor you installed ten or fifteen years ago has a finite life, and the Florida heat and humidity shorten it.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT has produced several motor lines over the years, and the replacement has to match the series, not just the brand. The main lines we see in West Palm Beach:
- Phobos – swing gate operator, common on residential driveway gates in neighborhoods like Northwood Hills and El Cid. Available in AC and 24V DC versions. The control board and capacitor are the usual failure points.
- Deimos – the slide gate counterpart to Phobos. Gear-driven, with a magnetic limit switch system that’s sensitive to moisture intrusion.
- Icaro – older swing operator, increasingly rare but still running on plenty of Palm Beach County properties. Parts are harder to source, which is why we keep refurbished boards on hand.
- Sub – underground swing operator, found on heavier ornamental iron gates. These fail differently: water ingress corrodes the internals, and replacement means digging out the foundation box.
- Rigon – newer swing line, 24V, often paired with solar. The motor itself is reliable, but the battery and charging system fail first.
To identify what you have, look for the metal data plate on the operator housing. It shows the model, voltage, and sometimes the production date. If the plate is worn off or sun-bleached, we can identify the motor by measuring the mounting bolt pattern and checking the control board layout. BFT doesn’t have a universal replacement: a Phobos motor won’t drop into a Deimos housing, and the bracket geometry differs even between generations of the same model line.
On OEM versus aftermarket: BFT OEM motors are well built, but the lead time from European distributors can stretch two to four weeks. When a quality aftermarket equivalent exists – and for Phobos and Deimos 24V motors it does – we’ll give you both options with written pricing so you can decide. We’re an independent service provider, not a BFT dealer, so our only loyalty is to what keeps your gate working.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- Gate opens but won’t close, or vice versa. One direction dies first. This usually points to a burned limit switch or a relay on the control board. The motor’s still spinning, but the brain telling it when to stop has gone out.
- Humming sound with no movement. The motor is getting power but the capacitor that starts the windings has failed. This is the single most common BFT swing motor failure we replace in South Florida. The heat bakes capacitors until they swell and pop.
- Gate starts, then stops halfway and reverses. The torque limiter or the force sensor thinks it hit an obstruction. On BFT motors, this is often the encoder or the magnetic limit ring drifting out of alignment after years of vibration.
- Remote opens the gate sometimes, but not every time. Intermittent operation on a BFT system usually traces back to water intrusion in the housing or a failing receiver board. We see this constantly after the heavy afternoon lightning season in Palm Beach County.
- Grinding or clicking from the motor housing. On slide gates, this is gear wear. On swing gates, it’s the internal worm drive or a failing bearing. Once it makes noise, the damage is already done, and replacement is cheaper than a rebuild.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In West Palm Beach, a complete BFT gate motor replacement breaks down roughly like this:
- Phobos or Deimos swing/slide motor (AC version): $850 to $1,150 installed
- Phobos or Deimos 24V DC version: $1,100 to $1,500 installed, including battery check and replacement if needed
- Sub underground operator: $1,600 to $2,400 installed, depending on excavation depth and drainage condition
- Rigon with new control board: $1,200 to $1,600 installed
Those prices cover the motor, the swap labor, limit switch calibration, force-setting adjustment, and a full cycle test with the gate on battery backup. If you need a new control board, add $300 to $650 depending on the model. The price is written and agreed before we open the toolbox. It doesn’t move at the door.
Every replacement carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the motor or our workmanship fails inside a year, we come back and make it right at no charge. That guarantee is on paper, not buried in fine print. Lonnie Burke reviews every written price before it goes to a customer.
DIY or Call Us?
The honest split on BFT motors: you can safely check your breaker, the battery condition on 24V units, and whether the gate itself is binding on the hinges or track. None of those require touching electrical components. Figure out what broke first. Everything else follows from that.
What we don’t recommend doing yourself is opening the operator housing and swapping a motor. BFT operators run 120V or 240V into the control board, and a wrong wire placement creates a shock or fire hazard. The limit-switch and force settings also have to be recalibrated to your specific gate weight and travel distance. Miss those, and the gate slams or stalls. If you’ve already got the gate apart or you’re not certain what failed, call (728) 203-2413 and we’ll diagnose it before anything gets replaced.
FAQs
A properly installed BFT motor in South Florida lasts 8 to 12 years on average. Coastal salt air near the Intracoastal and the constant heat and humidity knock a few years off compared to drier climates. Regular lubrication and keeping the housing sealed extend that range.
Sometimes. Capacitor replacements, limit switch swaps, and control board repairs are all viable if the motor windings and gears are still intact. We’ll open it up and find out what actually failed before recommending a full motor swap. Call (728) 203-2413 and we’ll walk through the symptoms with you first.
Most BFT swing motor replacements take 2 to 3 hours on site. Slide operators run 3 to 4 hours, and an underground Sub unit can take a full day if we’re digging out the foundation box. We arrive with the parts loaded, so there’s no second-trip wait.
Yes. We keep Phobos and Deimos motors, capacitors, limit switches, and control boards on the truck, along with parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems. If a part isn’t in stock, we can typically have it within five business days. You’ll know before we schedule the work.
