We repair and replace Linear keypads and intercom units throughout West Palm Beach, with most installed repairs running $185 to $420 depending on the model and what actually failed. The same-day service is real when we have the right part on the truck, which we usually do for the common Linear APeX and Multi-Code lines. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: the keypad stops accepting the code, the intercom goes silent at the street, or the gate only opens from one side of the property. You’re not imagining it getting worse – Florida humidity and salt air work on circuit boards and keypad membranes year-round, and Linear parts that run fine in Phoenix fail faster here. Lonnie Burke and our crew fix this specific problem regularly across West Palm Beach, from Northwood Hills to the neighborhoods west of I-95.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
The keypad and intercom systems we see most in West Palm Beach split into two families: the Linear APeX series (AP-5, AP-5R, AP-5W) and the older Multi-Code line (4120, 4200, 3089, and the 1099 keypad). If your keypad has a blue-gray face with silver trim, it’s almost certainly APeX. If it’s beige or off-white with a ribbed face, it’s Multi-Code. The part number is printed on a sticker inside the battery compartment or on the back of the housing – that number matters more than the model name, because Linear cross-listed several of these under different names. One thing that catches West Palm Beach owners off guard: APeX and Multi-Code transmitters are not interchangeable. An APeX keypad replaces an older Multi-Code unit, which is often what we recommend anyway, but you can’t mix a Multi-Code keypad with an APeX receiver on the same gate operator. We stock OEM Linear keypads plus quality aftermarket equivalents for the Multi-Code 1099, which Linear discontinued, and the right choice depends on whether your gate has a receiver board or a direct-wired keypad terminal. The aftermarket 1099 replacements work fine on direct-wire installs but can be picky with older Linear RF receivers, so we verify before we sell you one.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Is Failing
- Keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. This is usually a relay or a receiver issue, not the keypad itself. The keypad’s sending the right signal, but the gate operator isn’t acting on it. We trace that circuit before replacing anything, because swapping a $220 keypad won’t fix a bad receiver input on the board.
- Some buttons work and others don’t. Classic failing membrane. Humidity gets behind the faceplate, the carbon contacts corrode, and individual keys drop out. You can press harder for a few weeks, but that just finishes off the rest of the membrane.
- Intercom audio buzzes or cuts out when the gate opens. This points to a power or ground fault in the intercom wiring, often a corroded connection at the street box. Salt spray near coastal West Palm Beach properties attacks those terminals fast.
- Keypad works only from the street but not the pedestrian gate. Two separate circuits feed those, and one leg has failed. The keypad may be fine – the problem is the splice or the wire run to the second location.
- The display on an APeX keypad flickers or goes blank after rain. Water intrusion around the faceplate gasket. A new gasket and a reseal fixes this if the board hasn’t shorted, but once the display driver is toast, it’s a new keypad.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what West Palm Beach homeowners should expect to pay, installed, with the part and labor both in the number:
- Linear APeX AP-5 keypad replacement: $210 to $330 installed.
- Multi-Code 4200 or 4120 keypad replacement: $185 to $290 installed.
- Linear intercom handset or speaker unit repair: $190 to $340 installed.
- Full intercom board replacement with new weather housing: $280 to $420 installed.
What drives the range is whether we’re straight-swapping a keypad on an existing mount versus running new wire, cutting in a new weather box, or chasing a corroded splice. Every job gets a written price before we touch a screw, so the number you see is the number you pay. If the board or keypad died from water intrusion and we don’t fix the leak path, you’ll be back here in nine months – so we address the water entry as part of the repair, not as an add-on. Every repair carries our written 365-Day Done Right Promise, and if it fails inside that year, the second visit is free.

Low-voltage keypad work isn’t in the same danger class as tension springs or main power. The risks here are different: you can miswire a keypad and backfeed voltage into a gate operator board, which turns a $250 repair into an $800 board replacement. You can also order the wrong part from an online listing, because Linear model numbers and aftermarket “compatible” labels in West Palm Beach Facebook groups are a mess. What you can safely do: check the battery in the keypad (9V in most Multi-Code units), clean the faceplate contacts with a dry cloth, and verify if the breaker to the gate operator hasn’t tripped. If the keypad is getting power and the gate still doesn’t respond, call us at (728) 203-2413 before you open the operator housing. Lonnie Burke’s rule is simple: “Figure out what broke first. Everything else follows from that.” We’d rather diagnose your keypad correctly than replace the board you fried trying to guess.
FAQs
A Linear keypad in direct Florida sun and humidity typically lasts 5 to 8 years. Intercoms near the coast, where salt air reaches the terminals, often start failing around year 4. Units under a covered entry or in a shaded column routinely run 8 to 10 years. If yours died at year 2, water intrusion is the probable cause, and simply replacing it without a reseal will give you the same result. Call (728) 203-2413 and we’ll identify why it failed before we install the new one.
Sometimes, but honestly not often. A failed membrane or a dead display means replacement because those components aren’t serviceable individually. A sticky key from corrosion can sometimes be cleaned with contact cleaner and resealed if caught early. We’ll tell you which situation you have and what each option costs before you spend anything.
Most keypad swaps take 45 to 90 minutes on site. An intercom unit with wiring to trace can take 2 to 3 hours. If the part is on the truck, it’s one visit. If we need to order a specific Linear model, we’ll tell you the lead time and install it as soon as it arrives.
We stock APeX AP-5 keypads, Multi-Code 4200-series replacements, weather housings, and common intercom speaker and power components on the truck. For less common Linear equipment, we source directly through our supplier network, which also carries parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems. Call (728) 203-2413 and we’ll confirm what we have for your exact model before we dispatch.
